In an exclusive interview with RECREIO, Gyimah Garibah, the creator of “Big Blue: The Great Ocean”, revealed details behind the animation now available on Max
Did you know that one of the characters from “Big Blue: The Great Ocean”, an animation that is now available in the Max catalogue, inspired one of the title creator’s tattoos, Gyimah Garibah?
To understand how the adorable figure became a permanent mark on the skin of Garibahit is necessary to remember who each of those who tell the story of underwater production are, after all, the plot has 5 recurring characters: Lettie, the fearless captain of the crew; his annoying brother Lemo, a scientist; Bacon Berry, a magical baby; Phil, the dolphin doctor who is very concerned about the conditions of the sea, is always in a panic; and Freddie, the turtle engineer who, with his serene demeanor, always makes situations calmer.
In the plot, the brothers are given the responsibility of taking care of little Bacon Berry, who may have the secret to saving the world, while they explore and protect the vast ocean alongside the rest of the crew, completing tasks on board, solving mysteries and bringing valuable lessons. about environmental issues and the importance of friendship.
Among these, which is the star of Gyimah Garibah’s tattoo?
In an exclusive interview with RECREIO, Garibah He was asked which of these diverse characters he most identifies with, and revealing a tattoo of the adorable dolphin on his arm, he said it’s Phil.
“I identify with him because he’s very careful about everything he does, he’s very cautious and he’s very similar to who I am. When we were making Big Blue, I felt very careful and cautious about everything. I I was backstage: ‘How’s the animation?’ ‘How’s the sound?’ And everyone was like, ‘relax Gyim,’ so that’s who I identify with the most.”
It is worth remembering that, in the same chat, Garibah talked about how the idea for the animation came about, revealing that he has always liked stories that take place underwater.
“Well, I was thinking that I’ve always loved underwater things, like anything that happens underwater is really cool to me, because whenever I think about aliens and I think about all the possibilities of what’s out there in the universe, this is the first thing that comes to mind: ‘what’s going on underwater?’ So it seems like the perfect place and familiar enough to tell a story about caring about nature, because it’s all floating in the same soup down there. “
Furthermore, the production is aimed at children aged 5 to 9, making the creator explain his biggest concern when bringing the story to life and finally producing the episodes.
“I think one of the things that everyone was worried about was that during the time that ‘Big Blue’ was being created we were going through the coronavirus, so to have a villain that’s like pollution and a big scary monster like that it makes you not feel good about this kind of destruction of the environment since it was a very scary thing to go through. So we had to convey it in a way that people understand that there are bad things in this world, and that sometimes it isn’t. just one person, it’s an idea. So the villain of the show is an idea that pollution or not caring can actually destroy the world you love,” Garibah explained.
Even though bringing this idea within the context experienced at the time, after all, the animation was released in December 2021 while the world was facing the COVID-19 pandemic, Garibah He said that he believes they managed to combine the seriousness of the subject with fun moments for the characters.
That was really hard, but it was balanced with how silly the characters are, so it never felt too scary because there are always silly jokes about farts and burritos and sandwiches and normal family stuff to balance it out.
With 52 episodes of 11 minutes each, “Big Blue: The Great Ocean” arrived in the Max and Cartoon Network catalog on September 27th, arriving on national soil around two and a half years after its official launch, making Garibah was excited about the debut.
I’m very excited! The whole idea of ”Big Blue” is just to help everyone realize that we’re all sharing this planet, so all the different places that the show can air makes me really excited because some of the places I’ve never been and It makes it feel like the show is going on its own adventure, so that’s cool to me,” he said.
Alongside him, the Director of Acquisitions, Co-productions and Content Sales, Jessica Bishopalso shared the animation with the title’s debut. “The Warner Brothers Discovery side was really excited to have ‘Big Blue’ on Max and Cartoon Network, and there are so many important messages, so we’re really excited for everyone in Brazil and everyone in the Latin American market to watch it. “, he stated.
