CREATION
Of Bruce Timm and Paul DiniHarley Quinn appeared in the television animation “Batman: The Animated Series”, being presented in the episode “Joker’s Favor” (“A Favor for the Joker”), originally shown on September 11, 1992. At the time, she was introduced in the story as a sidekick to the Joker, as she was the villain’s right-hand man during an attempt to end Commissioner Gordon’s life.
Due to the good public reception, she appeared in new episodes and it wasn’t long before she was also incorporated into the pages of DC Comics, debuting in issue number 12 of “The Batman Adventures” (1993), where she and Poison Ivy tried to kidnap Sandy for a ransom of ten million, being interrupted by Batgirl and Catwoman.
ORIGIN
Still, Harley Quinn’s origin was only explained two years after her first appearance. In “Crazy Love and Other Stories”, from 1994, fans discover that the real name of this person who disturbs the peace of Gotham City is Harleen Frances Quinzel, who started life brilliantly, becoming a talented gymnast in high school and studying veterinary and biological sciences before finding herself in psychiatry, a training that transformed Dr. Quinzel’s life forever.
That’s because she became a promising psychologist and intern at Arkham Asylum, where she decided to start an experiment in an attempt to get into patients’ heads. The problem is that she ended up obsessed with the project, and when trying to unravel the Joker’s mind, she ended up falling in love with the Clown Prince of Crime, committing the madness of killing her supervisor, Dr. Sterano, so as not to distance herself from the villain, in addition to helping him. escaping from prison.
With that, she assumed the identity of Harley Quinn when Joker took her to the Ace Chemical Processing Plant, where she ended up falling into a tank of chemical compounds — from where she emerged not only alive, but willing to commit several insane actions alongside her former patient, to whom she became extremely devoted.
EMANCIPATION
Joker and Harley Quinn had a toxic relationship, and at a certain point in “Batman: The Animated Series”, the two break up and Joker kicks her out of his gang. From then on, the villain begins her emancipation, that is, her journey of liberation and independence, which gains strength, especially when she joins Poison Ivy, with whom she has a romance.
It is worth mentioning that Hera becomes responsible for granting Harley Quinn superhuman abilities, as by injecting the character with a serum, she gains extensive agility, strength and immunity to toxins.
More than that, freed from Joker and more powerful, Harley Quinn joined teams such as the Suicide Squad and Gotham City’s female gang, the Gotham City Sirens, becoming one of the main supervillains in DC stories.
