1. Silly baboons babbling in a pack
In “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, Minerva is the teacher responsible for introducing Gryffindor students to a tradition of the Triwizard Tournament: the Yule Ball, held on Christmas Eve. The news ends up generating a huge uproar among young people, mainly due to the dance, causing her to release the iconic line:
“The house of Godric Gryffindor has been respected by the wizarding world for nearly ten centuries. I will not allow you, for a single night, to tarnish this name by behaving like silly baboons babbling in a pack.”
2. Facing Dolores Umbridge
In the fifth film in the franchise, “Order of the Phoenix”, Dolores Umbridge arrives at Hogwarts appointed by the Ministry of Magic as school High Inquisitor, with the aim of “reorganizing” the school, adopting methods considered by Minerva to be medieval. During Umbridge’s days at school, McGonagall is one of the main names to always oppose the woman’s controversial attitudes.
When Dolores fires teacher Trelawney, for example, it is Minerva who appears to defend the educator, stating that she has “several things she would like to say” to the woman. At the beginning of the film, the Gryffindor headmistress also confronts Umbridge to defend the students, asking her to follow “the prescribed disciplinary rules” and stop using her “medieval methods”.
3. Nimbus 2000
In the first film, after her first broomstick lesson, Minerva notices Harry Potter’s talent, and nominates him to be the new Seeker on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. The boy surprises Oliver Wood, the captain, and is soon accepted into the team, achieving something extremely difficult: a first-year student being accepted into the team.
Therefore, to help with his performance, Minerva surprises Harry and presents him with a Nimbus 2000, one of the main and fastest brooms of the time.
4. Duel with Severus Snape
In “Deathly Hallows — Part 2”, after Severus Snape takes over as headmaster of Hogwarts, Harry returns to the school before the start of the memorable Battle of Hogwarts against Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters, and confronts the teacher asking him to tell to the other students that he was responsible for killing Dumbledore.
As the young man raged, Severus pulled out his wand to attack him, when Minerva appeared in front of Potter wielding her wand to defend him. The two then begin an epic and powerful duel, which results in Snape escaping through the window while McGonagall calls him a coward.
5. Piertotum Locomotor
Also in the last film, moments before the Battle of Hogwarts begins, Minerva and the other teachers take charge of casting spells to protect the school. With that, the teacher launches the “Piertotum Locomotor”, a spell that brings to life the statues and armor present in front of the school, which become a new form of defense against Voldemort and the Death Eaters.
In the scene, she says: “Hogwarts is in danger. Guard the walls. Protect us! Do your duty to our school! […] I always wanted to use this spell.”
