Between films and series; discover other productions with British actress Maggie Smith, the eternal Minerva McGonagall from the Harry Potter franchise
This Friday, the 27th, fans of cinema, television and theater suffered a great loss! This is because the date marked the death of the British actress maggie smithwho at the age of 89, and almost 70 years of career, left as a legacy countless roles in the different formats in which the art of acting can be noted, among these, that of Professor Minerva McGonagall, played by her in the films of the Harry Potter franchise.
The death of Smith was communicated by Toby Stephens and Chris Larkinthe artist’s children, through social media, but the cause of death was not revealed. “She leaves two children and five beloved grandchildren who are devastated by the enormous loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” reads an excerpt from the post.

1. Spring of a Spinster (1969)
Two-time Oscar winner, the first golden statuette of Smith came up with “Spring of a Spinster”, for which she won the best actress category. In the 1969 title, she plays Jean Brodie, a teacher at a girls’ school in Edinburgh in the 1930s, who while inspiring a new generation of girls, becomes involved in romance, drama and even murder, while also being scandalized by her fascist ideas.
2. California Suite (1978)
The second Oscar came in the category of Best Supporting Actress for “California Suite” (1978). In the plot, she plays Daiana Barrie, who coincidentally is an actress who travels to the city to go to the Oscar ceremony, where she is one of the nominees. To do this, she stays in a hotel, where her story and that of three different guests are told at the same time.
3. Tea with Mussolini (1999)
Available for rent on Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube and Apple TV, “Chá com Mussolini” (1999) earned Smith a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. In the story, she is Lady Hester Random, one of three women who want to transform the orphan, Luca, into a “perfect British gentleman” during the 1930s. With the start of World War II, their lives change radically and Luca, now a teenager, he will strive to help them and repay all the effort they made with him.
4. Change of Habit (1992)
In “Change of Habit” (1992), Maggie is the Mother Superior of a convent in San Francisco who receives Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg), a singer who arrives at the convent disguised as a nun, using the name Sister Mary Clarence, after witnessing a murder and being placed in the witness protection program, transforming the reality of the convent.

5. Downtown Abbey (2010)

5-season series, “Downtown Abbey” brought a Golden Globe, three Emmys and four Screen Actors Guild Awards to maggie smith. The episodes, available in the Netflix catalogue, have the following synopsis: “This drama series follows the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants, exposing the snobbery, machinations and gossip of a class system in decline.”
