The biopic about the Greek singer, directed by Pablo Larran, should be available on Netflix from December 11.
Maria Callas died in 1977 after a heart attack at the age of only 53. But his voice continued. Today, it is playing again in the cinema, in the title film Maria. And to play this legendary singer, at least an internationally known actress like Angelina Jolie was needed. Some images were already revealed a year ago, which already hinted at the similarity between the American actress and the Greek opera singer. The airing of the first trailer for the Pablo Laraine-directed biopic this Thursday, September 26, allowed us to reveal more.
“I will give everything to face this challenge”
A film based on true events Maria will tell the turbulent and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer in the last years of her life in Paris in the 1970s. So we find Angelina Jolie sometimes happy and in love in the skin of Maria Callas, celebrating and on vacation, sometimes very lonely, worried, in tears, almost tormented. “I will give everything to be able to face the challenge,” the actress said in a press release Variety in October 2022. Pablo Larraín is a director I have admired for a long time. To be able to tell Maria’s story with her, from Stephen Knight’s script, is a dream come true.”
It is to Pablo Larran that we already owe two very famous biographies. Jackie (2016), in which Natalie Portman plays Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Spencer: (2021), in which Kristen Stewart portrays Princess Diana. Roles for which both actresses were nominated for an Oscar. As for the awards she could receive for this role, which has already been described as “the role of her life”, Angelina Jolie stated that her success would be appreciated by Callas’ fans “and those who love opera”. “My fear would be to disappoint them,” he declared. The film presented at the Venice Film Festival in August received a standing ovation for no less than 8 minutes.
