Find out if the animations “Inside Out” and “Up” belong to the same universe according to the Pixar Theory
The “Pixar Theory”, created in 2013 by the writer and journalist Jon Negroniestablishes the idea that all Pixar films are connected in a kind of timeline. The theory also suggests that the studio inserts references and striking objects, such as Easter Eggs, to create these connections between the films, making all the stories become part of the same universe.
A practical example of this theory is the connection between “Inside Out” and “Up.” Although the films are not set in the same year or location, there is a hint that Riley, the protagonist of “Inside Out,” could have childhood memories related to “Up.”
Like this?
During the first film, fans identified (via Screen Rant) a “memory orb” in Riley’s mind that contained fragments of Ellie and Carl’s wedding, suggesting that the character may have watched the film when she was still a child.
Another point that can both add to and refute this supposed connection is the fact that both animations bear the name of the same director: Pete Docter, who has been involved in major Pixar projects, with “Inside Out” and “Up” being two of the studio’s biggest hits.
The presence of Ellie and Carl’s memories in Riley’s mind could be interpreted as just a homage to a previous project or as an indication that Riley actually watched “Up”, fueling the fan theory.
Since none of the options have been confirmed by the director or the studio, we can still explore several possibilities with our imagination. After all, one of the main messages of Pixar films is precisely the openness to interpretation and creativity of the audience.
Currently, the first “Inside Out” film and the feature film “Up” are available through Disney+; watch the trailers!
