A little while ago, in the offices of the fashion house in Paris, the first images of Pierre Cardin’s lunar outfit for astronauts of the European Space Agency were revealed.
The conquest of space through fashion has begun. It was this September 9th at the Parisian workshops of Pierre Cardin that Rodrigo Basilicati, nephew of the late creator and current president of the Pierre Cardin company, Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin, revealed a preview of the space suit. This was specially created for ESA (European Space Agency) astronauts and their training mission, called Luna, at the simulation center in Cologne, Germany. This collaboration between the French fashion house and the Space Agency was created during the brand’s 2023 fashion show in Switzerland.
German astronaut Matthias Maurer had the privilege of wearing a prototype in front of journalists’ cameras. This white tracksuit features a spongy blue recycled fabric around the edges, as well as silver edging to outline the silhouette. The control unit consists of an ivory painted block that reveals the gray Pierre Cardin logo. A spatial collection reminiscent of previous pieces, straight from the future, born in the mind of Franco-Italian fashion designer Pierre Cardin, an astronomy enthusiast who died in 2020. When introducing this moon suit, Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin told WWD magazine:
Pierre Cardin: Space Conqueror
Unable to jump into weightlessness, Pierre Cardin has based his collections since the 1960s on the fantasy of conquering space. Age-old trend, iconic fashion from 1965-1969, marked by space discoveries. Cardin’s wardrobe then included stunning pieces such as a bubble dress, an aluminum effect jumpsuit or even a vinyl and rubber dress from the 1955 Cosmos collection. In 1971, during a visit to NASA, the creator was able to try on Buzz Aldrin’s space suit, an experience he repeated a year before his death, this time wearing Neil Armstrong’s space suit. A small step for a man, a big step for the house of Pierre Cardin.
