At the same time, TIFF continues to believe that the film “deserves a place in the festival program” and wants to show it when it is safe to do so.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has canceled its screening of Russian director Anastasia Trofimova’s film Russians at War following widespread protests. This was stated in the statement of the festival organizing committee.

The film sparked outrage for its depiction of the Russian occupiers as “ordinary” people, despite their crimes in Ukraine. Festival organizers said the cancellation was forced due to threats to the safety of visitors, staff and volunteers.

“We are forced to suspend the screening of Russians at War on Friday, Saturday and Sunday because we have become aware of significant threats to festival operations and public safety. While we stand by our statement issued yesterday, this decision has been made to ensure the safety of all guests, festival staff and volunteers,” the statement said.

The organizers also said that it was an incredibly difficult decision, because, in their opinion, this film “deserves a place in the festival program.”

“When we select films, we are guided by TIFF’s mission, our values and program principles. We believe this film has earned a place in our festival program, and we are committed to showing it when it is safe to do so. do it.” concluded the press service of the film festival.

Previously, the film was shown at the Venice Film Festival, which caused widespread criticism from Ukraine.

It was earlier reported that the winners of the Golden Dziga 2024 film award have been announced.

It is already known which film will represent Ukraine at the 2025 Oscars
