Directed by Hayao Miyazakithe film is set in Japan and follows Mahito, an 11-year-old boy who, after losing his mother, is forced to leave Tokyo and return to the village where he grew up. Upon settling into his new home with his father, the young man meets a heron and sets off on a journey to another world that helps him understand the feelings that dominate him.
“The Boy and the Heron” was responsible for bringing the second Oscar of Miyazaki in the category of Best Animation, since, before the plot won this year’s award by competing against “Elements”, “My Robot Friend”, “Nimona” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, the director had been honored with “Spirited Away”, a film that, by taking home the golden statuette at the 2003 ceremony, became the first non-English language animated feature film to receive the award.
