When it comes to icons, there is no doubt that Buzz Lightyear is one of the most iconic animated film characters of recent decades. A born leader, driven and fearless, Andy’s beloved space ranger first appeared in the 1995 film Toy Story.

Today, 27 years later, he continues to captivate audiences in theaters with his “Light year”last movie Disney D pixar which focuses on Buzz’s origin story, the starting point to take viewers on an adventure 4.2 million light-years from Earth.

These are the four connection points between “Toy Story” D “Light year”that every Space Guardian fan will want to know.

movie about movie

At the start of development “Light year”director Angus MacLaine and his team used the following concept as a guide: the new story was supposed to be the blockbuster that Andy must have seen and made him ask for the Buzz toy that was introduced to the world in the first installment of the franchise.

“’Light year’ this is the movie that Andy and his friends have seen, and probably almost everyone in the world has seen. I wanted to do something that was in line with these big-budget films,” MacLaine says. The result is a story that combines elements of sci-fi, action and adventure, and showcases all the traits that make “Light year” a real hero worthy of admiration.

For the creative team, the new film also provided a valuable opportunity to explore the character in more depth. “Since we got to know the character, Buzz has developed an interesting inherent tendency to see the world in a very special way. His version of reality is never the same as everyone else’s, and there’s something really funny about that,” notes producer Galin Zusman.

Unmistakable Outfit

Buzz’s identity is forever linked to his unmistakable Space Ranger costume. That is why the art team that developed the images of the protagonist in the new film knew that the starting point was the apparently world-famous costume from the franchise. “Toy Story”. Thus, the fans will identify themselves in “Light year” iconic image of their favorite hero, but they will also be surprised by more.

In order to keep Buzz’s instantly recognizable element as an icon, the team kept the character’s color palette and some physical traits such as his pointed jawline. They then worked to give the character an aspect far from the idea of a toy and closer to a real hero, working on a collection of space suits that evolve in accordance with the development of the character and his adventures in the story. . . . Result? Sophisticated catwalk show with the “100% Buzz” image that everyone loves, as well as new outfits inspired by real-life NASA astronaut gear.

iconic villain

AT “Light year” There is one presence that fans will instantly recognize: Zurg. Historical villain and eternal rival of Buzz featured in the films “Toy Story”, appears in this new story with an imposing appearance and accompanied by an army of ruthless robots. Shrouded in darkness and mystery, Zurg’s mission is unclear, but a great threat looms.

Director Angus McLane was one of the artists who worked on Zurg’s designs in “Toy Story 2”, and was excited to explore the character. “Of course, Zurg is a villain. We knew for a long time that he was Buzz’s enemy, but we never knew why, ”says the director. The new story explains it.

In the film, Zurg’s design is based on the toy, but features a new modernized aesthetic. “We needed our Zurg to match the new aesthetic we had developed to create a sci-fi world. First of all, Zurg was supposed to be dangerous. The design had to be intimidating to represent the threat and presence our story demanded,” says Greg Peltz, the film’s art director.

The phrase that has traveled the world

Who has never heard the iconic phrase “To infinity… and beyond!”? The famous words were immortalized with a Buzz toy in 1995. “Light year” reveals its origin.

And when you seeLight year” you understand that it refers to the connection. It has to do with friendship.”

The actress says that when it came time to record the phrase, she was simply speechless. “When we read the scene and I got to the part where I say “to infinity”, I had a lump in my throat.
