Find out which character is featured in one of the nearly 30 animated titles from Pixar Studios whose face has never been revealed
With almost 30 animated feature films, Pixar has a diverse range of stories in its production catalogue — and one of the most beloved is ‘The Incredibles’, which hit theaters in 2004, telling the story of a family of superheroes, the Pears, made up of the father, Bob (Mr. Incredible); the mother, Helen (Elastigirl); and the children, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack, who, despite their extraordinary superhuman powers, had been living a quiet life in the suburbs for 15 years. However, one day, Bob received a mysterious call that ended up putting them all back into action to save the world.
The plot was a success and, as a result, a sequel was released 14 years later, where it is possible to see not only the superhero quintet, but also other great characters from the first film, among them, Edna Moda, the designer responsible for creating the heroes’ costumes and Frozone, one of the allies of the Parr family. In addition, a third film is on the way, as Pixar confirmed at this year’s D23 Expo that “The Incredibles 3” is in development by the studio.
But, even with 20 years of franchise, did you know that one of the title’s most memorable characters has his voice engraved in the minds of fans, but his face has never been shown on the big screen?
The Pixar character whose appearance has never been revealed
The character in question is Mel, Frozone’s wife. She appears in conversation with the hero when the Omnidroid destroys Metroville and, wanting to prevent further destruction, Frozone starts looking for his suit to defeat the robotic antagonist. However, upon realizing that the suit is not stored in the correct place, the hero then shouts: “Mel, where is my uniform?”, but in response, ends up receiving a scolding from his wife: “Don’t even think about going out there and saving the world now, we arranged this dinner two months ago!”
Frozone then insists on having his uniform, stating that putting his ice powers into practice would be “a greater good”, leading Mel to say the iconic phrase: “Greater good? I’m your wife, I’m the greatest good you’ll ever get in this life!”; remember:
Although Mel’s appearance remains a secret, this was not the original plan. This is because the character was supposed to have her face revealed in 2018’s “The Incredibles 2”, as revealed by the director. Brad Bird to IGN the year the film was released.
It turns out that Bird said that Mel would appear in the first minutes of the film, once again trying to stop her husband from stepping in to save humanity from a new threat. The scene was cut from the final version, but as revealed by IGN, it would follow Mel hiding the superhero costume in the kitchen cupboard while yelling to her husband that the laundry is being washed. He ends up finding it, and in an attempt to outwit his wife to leave the house and help the Parr family defeat the Digger, he ends up freezing Mel’s shoes to the floor.
We thought it would be cool to introduce a person who you discover, during the scene, is Mel. […] But we thought that would take away from the action for too long, the energy we were getting from the fight, and we decided that keeping her off camera is part of the joke. Then Mel can be whatever you imagine,” Brad Bird explained about why Mel’s identity was not included in the plot.
