What would Walt Disney think of the live-action Snow White? Original director’s son reveals

In an interview in 2023, the son of the original director, David Hand, revealed what Walt Disney might think of the new live-action Snow White

Since its announcement, the live-action version of “Snow White” has been surrounded by controversy. Last month, with the release of the first trailer, the production was once again the target of strong criticism from the public, who disapproved of points such as the protagonist’s appearance, the characterization of some characters, and the choice to use CGI instead of real actors to represent the seven dwarfs.

Last week, the situation became even more complicated when, through social media, the protagonists Gal Gadot (Evil Queen) and Rachel Zegler (Snow White), allegedly had a disagreement due to ideological disagreements related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with possible indirect messages sent through Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). The possible fight between the actresses has not yet been commented on by Disney.

Due to these frequent controversies, many fans began to wonder: after all, what Walt Disney would you think of all this confusion involving one of your most important characters?

“Turning in his grave”

In 2023, during an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph (via Cine Pop), the animator David Hale Handson of David Handoriginal director of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, blasted the new production, stating that both Disneyas well as her father, would be “turning in their graves” with all the changes made to the story of the memorable princess.

“The new ‘Snow White’ movie is a totally different concept, and I totally disagree with it, and I know my father and Walt would disagree with it. There’s no respect for what Disney did, what my father did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves,” David said.

In the conversation, Hand He also says he believes it is a “disgrace” to adapt something that was so successful before, and considers what the studio has done with classic films “a little offensive”.

“It’s a disgrace that Disney is trying to make something new out of something that was a huge success before… Their thinking is so radical now. They’re changing the stories, they’re changing the thought process of the characters. They’re inventing new things and I just don’t like any of that. I find it frankly a little offensive what they might have done with some of these classic films.”

The animator ends his reasoning by sending a criticism to the Mickey Mouse club, asking Disney to create new characters and stop rewriting old classics.

“[A Disney] “You shouldn’t take a classic and rewrite it in your own image. Choose to do something else… Create new characters, but don’t destroy or try to destroy a classic,” he concluded.
