‘Inside Out 2’ Director Reveals Scrapped Scene Featuring Shame and Anxiety

Kelsey Mann, director of “Inside Out 2”, revealed some details about a discarded scene involving the emotions Shame and Anxiety; find out more!

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kelsey Manndirector of “Inside Out 2”, revealed details about a scrapped scene involving the emotions Shame and Anxiety.

He explains that Riley, the film’s protagonist, was supposed to play the famous “Never Have I Ever” game during hockey camp, where the main goal was to explore the feelings of not being good enough and being too hard on herself. In the end, he and the production team decided to replace the scene, focusing on just one character instead of dividing the attention between two emotions:

In this version, you’ll see Anxiety and Shame together. They’re kind of a pair. And we were drawn to the idea of Riley’s shame spiraling out of control, causing a storm. There’s an element there that’s still in the movie, but instead of a shame spiral, we ended up making it just about Anxiety. It just simplified the movie and put the focus on one character – the character Anxiety, rather than having that focus split between Anxiety and Shame.

EW also reveals that in the drafts for the deleted scene, Shame is depicted differently. In the initial draft, the character was a woman who hid behind her hair, the strands of which became increasingly thin as Riley’s sense of shame grew.

Furthermore, since its premiere last June, “Inside Out 2” has already become the highest-grossing animated film in the history of world cinema, grossing around US$ 1.46 billion, and even surpassing hits such as “Frozen 2” and “The Incredibles 2”. The film does not yet have a release date for Disney+, but it will be available for purchase or rental through Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube and Google Play, starting August 20 in the United States.
