After all, why did Maui steal Te Fiti’s heart?

Understand why Maui stole Te Fiti’s heart in ‘Moana – A Sea of Adventures’, a film released in 2016

In “Moana – A Sea of Adventures” we follow the journey of Moana and the demigod Maui to return the heart of Te Fiti. The goddess’ heart was stolen by Maui himself and this caused a curse to spread across the ocean and begin to affect the lives of the seafarers and the people who lived on the islands. After a thousand years of the theft, the ocean decides to give the heart to Moana, when she was still a baby and told her that she would revive the goddess when she grew up. — But have you ever wondered why Maui stole the goddess’ heart?

Motivated by good

The Heart of Te Fiti is an ancient jewel possessed by the goddess, who is the mother island. The object gave her the ability to create islands with flora and fauna that served as a home for the people of the South Pacific.

Maui is known for being a trickster god, which means he creates some mischief. Most of his actions are in favor of humanity, and that was the reason for his theft: he decided to take Te Fiti’s heart to give as a gift to humans. For him, this act would prove his greatness, in addition to gaining admiration from everyone. The demigod just didn’t count on the fact that by stealing the jewel, he would lose his powers and install a curse that would affect humans, the people he so wanted to please.

During the song “You’re Welcome” (in Portuguese “De Nada”), the character voiced by Dwayne Johnsonlists all the things he did to earn humanity’s gratitude. Among the feats mentioned, he says that he brought fire to ward off cold nights and that he controls the breeze and the tides, so that everyone can sail. Remember the moment!

Thus, Maui believed that giving humans the ability to create life would be the greatest gift and that he would be idolized forever. But when he lost the jewel, his reputation was tarnished among humanity. He only decided to help Moana return the heart with the promise that he would be admired again, which ended up being fundamental in his life.

Difference between film and mythology

The Maui we know in the Disney film tends to be a bit more narcissistic than the Maui seen in Polynesian legends. While the animated version performs various actions to be worshipped, the mythical demigod performed his deeds with the sole purpose of helping humanity.

It is worth remembering that in the end, Maui makes amends with Te Fiti for his reckless actions and ends up receiving a new hook from her, due to his heroic actions in helping Moana and not thinking only of himself.
