Fantasies and idealization of the vacation schedule, vacations that are too long, work that is not finished… Update all these elements that spoil the summer vacation.
You only dream about this period of rest. So why not take full advantage of it when the holidays are here? Some everyday inconveniences or bad habits may end up in your suitcases. Review of disruptive elements.
Waiting too much
You have perfectly discovered the heavenly beaches of Cancun and can easily imagine yourself sipping a cocktail in a stroller. This vacation is your only motivation lately… and here’s your first mistake. “When we project too much, when we idealize something, we mostly end up disappointed because the reality is often different. We can feel bad about it,” explains clinical psychologist Maite Tranzer. And this behavior can even make us miss the essentials. “We always live in expectation. We are always ‘looking forward’ and living in harmony with reality,” explains Sophie Tremm, creator. Good mood lessonmaster classes on good humor, and founder of the Other Art of Living blog.

Plan your vacation
You were only able to take a week off, so it’s important to optimize the time as much as possible. Therefore, you have set a very precise plan to follow from the first to the last day, and the unexpected is not expected. Even if it’s well-intentioned, the idea can quickly become a source of conflict if you’re in a group. “There are people who need to stick to an organization to make themselves feel better or fear the unknown. But it doesn’t suit everyone, and in the community you have to respect the wishes of each person,” recalls Sophie Trem. In addition, “leaving room for spontaneity allows you to better enjoy the present moment,” adds psychologist Maite Tranzer. So instead of sticking to your schedule at all costs, try to let go of some ballast. It’s not too bad that you haven’t traveled all over the Riviera Maya.

Keep the same rhythm as daily
You’re on vacation, so you feel less stressed a priori. So why bother if the waiter is taking too long with the meal? “We always try to make the most of time in our daily lives and unconsciously maintain the same behavior on vacation without really knowing why,” says Maïté Tranzer. However, it is important to slow down and take time to appreciate the moment; “The body and mind don’t realize we’re on vacation until we change our routine. If we don’t do that, we’re less aware of what’s going on,” says Sophie Treme. Without forgetting that stress and haste cause anxiety. Worries we could do without a vacation, everyone will agree.
Wake up at the same time
You are organized like clockwork and systematically wake up at 6 am. “The body gets used to the daily rhythm, and sometimes it is difficult to deprogram it. This can be frustrating and interfere with rest, because the whole point of a vacation is to avoid this usual rhythm,” emphasizes the psychologist. According to the expert, the ideal is to wake up naturally in your resting place so that you are less in control and let go.
Leave the job pending
“Just as when we’re at work we think about holidays, when we’re on holiday we naturally think about work,” notes Sophie Tremm. According to psychologist Maite Tranzer, “this creates a feeling of something unfinished, which can even lead to the fear of losing the place we have created in the workplace.” One thought leads to another. “we quickly get stressed, busy, and end up feeling guilty. Our attention is focused on what we haven’t done, so it will be impossible to fully relax,” warns Sophie Treme. So make sure you go on vacation as peacefully as possible by completing the tasks in progress if you don’t feel like you can skip them.
Perception of return from vacation
You still have a few days at the beach, but you’re already looking forward to returning to your daily life and the problems you’ll eventually have to deal with. “Sometimes this ‘anxiety’ is only illusory or not even as serious as we think, but we get it by thinking about it,” says Sophie Tremm. “Most vacationers, for example, are afraid of being robbed or afraid of water damage while they’re away. These expectations cause stress, pollute our thoughts and prevent us from enjoying our holidays,” the psychologist warns.
Taking too long a vacation
Going away for the whole month of July seemed like a good idea, but after two weeks you realize that Cancun isn’t as big as you thought, and you start seriously detouring. “Boredom can cause a feeling of emptiness or extreme loneliness,” explains Maite Tranzer. This may prompt some to be hyperactive during the holidays to avoid this feeling, but it also raises deeper questions,” continues the expert. Finally, too long a vacation can also “make the most addicted nostalgic,” the psychologist notes. So choose quality over quantity.
