With filming for the 2nd season of the live-action One Piece underway, discover 5 interesting facts about the series that you may not know!
Based on the manga of the same name, the live-action series ofOne Piece have received several positive reviews since their debut on Netflix in August 2023. Many fans of the story of Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates have praised the production, including many requests for renewal just a few days after its release.
Fortunately, filming for season 2 is already underway and, with that in mind, RECREIO has prepared a list with some interesting facts about the series that you might not know; check it out!
1. Eiichiro Oda serves as executive producer of the series
The author of the manga, Eiichiro Odawas announced as one of the series’ executive producers at the beginning of the promotions, in 2017. In fact, close to the launch in 2023, he shared his enthusiasm through a post on One Piece’s official Instagram, saying sincerely that he didn’t think it would be possible for his story to become an international production, mainly due to the differences between cultures:
Although they (Tomorrow Studios and Netflix) understand my characters very well, we come from very different cultures. These differences are reflected in our standards, skills and goals regarding entertainment. At one point, I even thought that an international production would not be possible.”
2. Iñaki Godoy was the perfect Luffy from the start
In 2023, during an interview released by Netflix, Iñaki Godoywho plays Luffy in the live-action, met with Eiichiro Oda in Tokyo, Japan. In the conversation, the author of the work comments on his fear of finding someone with the same personality as the protagonist, leaving Iñaki surprised to say that he “laughed a little” while watching his casting test, which is why he got the role in the live-action; watch it!
3. The actress who plays the character Nami is a fan of One Piece
The actress Emily Ruddwho plays Nami in the live-action, revealed in an exclusive interview with POPline that she was already a fan of One Piece even before being chosen for the role. In addition, she also shares a little about the period in which she was called for the casting test; read:
One Piece is one of my favorite mangas and I’ve always really liked Nami. When I found out they were going to make a live-action series, I spent three years trying everything I could to get the role (…) About a month before the audition for One Piece: The Series, I auditioned for a regular role in another series. In the end, it was just me and one other person. And she was chosen. It was a really cool project, which I really wanted to do. I was devastated. Plus, it was right at the height of the Covid pandemic, and I had to work. But everything was very uncertain. Then, a month later, I was called to audition for Nami. That’s when I realized that if I had been chosen for the other series, I would have to give up One Piece. It was like I had received a message from the universe.”
4. The main cast came from many different places
In the manga and anime, the Straw Hat Pirates come from different regions of the One Piece universe. Fortunately, this is also true in the series, as the main cast features a diversity of nationalities among them. Inãki Godoy is mexican, Emily Rudd is American, Usopp (Jacob Romero) was born in Jamaica, Sanji (Taz Sylar) is half Spanish and half English and Zoro (Mackenyu Arata) is half Japanese and half American.

5. Filming
The live-action One Piece was filmed at a Cape Town Film Studios cinema complex located in Cape Town, a port island in South Africa. The setting fits perfectly with the series’ theme, as it involves many boats, scenes at sea and several other elements reminiscent of pirates.
