Is Mirabel the reincarnation of her grandfather Pedro?

In the animation “Encanto”, we meet the Madrigals, a special family who, after being blessed with a miracle, all begin to develop powers when they reach a specific age — except Mirabel, who is the only one who, for an unknown reason, does not have any powers.

During the film, we discover that the family’s special abilities have not always existed. In fact, the gift was bestowed upon them after a tragedy: the death of Pedro, the Madrigal patriarch and Abuela Alma’s husband.

The situation occurs when the couple is forced to flee their hometown along with their triplets, Julieta, Pepa and Bruno, who were still babies, due to the outbreak of an armed conflict. During their escape, while crossing a river, they end up coming across a group of officers and, when Pedro tries to talk to them, he is murdered.

At the time of his death, the candle he had given to his beloved with the intention of lighting the way during their escape ended up being transformed into a magical item, becoming responsible for the powers that would be granted to his descendants, starting with the triplets.

Is Mirabel the reincarnation of Peter?

According to a theory shared by a fan through the Reddit platform, after passing away, Pedro would have been reincarnated as Mirabel, since the protagonist is frequently connected to her grandfather during the film, with this also being one of the possible justifications for the fact that the protagonist does not have powers, since the patriarch was an ordinary human, taking into account that the Madrigal’s special abilities only emerged after his death.

As reported by ScreenRant, in addition to the physical resemblance between the two, one of the arguments pointed out by the fan is that, at the end of the film, after the Casita collapses, Mirabel runs to the river where Abuelo Pedro would have died, even without knowing the story. Instinctively, Alma would have discovered that this would be the place where she would find her granddaughter, returning to the river for the first time since the tragedy.

Another supposed piece of evidence is the association of the two with butterflies. While for Pedro the insect appears at the moment he meets Alma and is present in her portrait in the house, for Mirabel the animal can be found on her dress, and also appears during her conversation with Abuela at the moment she hears the story of the miracle.

Although some fans believe in the theory, it has never been confirmed by Disney. Currently, “Encanto” is available for streaming on the Disney+ platform.
