What breed is Percy, Pocahontas’ dog?

As in all Disney princess stories, Pocahontas also has a mascot that accompanies her throughout the films. Percy, her pet dog, first appeared in the 1995 film, where he arrived in the character’s lands with the ambitious English Governor Ratcliffe.

Due to the lack of attention he receives from his owner, Percy ends up getting close to Pocahontas and Meeko, her raccoon, which makes the protagonist soon adopt him and become his friend. According to Disney, Percy is a Pug, which is characterized by being small, with a flat snout and short tail. The dog has all these physical characteristics, in addition to being white and having gray ears and face. Apart from that, Pugs are considered very intelligent, playful and a great companion for those looking for a pet.

In fact, according to the Cosmopolitan magazine website, the research director for “Pocahontas”, Mike Gabrieldiscovered that it was common for British royalty to carry small dogs with them on their travels. So it’s quite possible that the inspiration for Percy came from an animal that actually existed at the time the film is set.
