Producer Terry Rossio said he would gladly allow Johnny Depp to return to his role as Jack Sparrow.
Pirates of the Caribbean franchise writer and producer Terry Rossio is ready to bring Johnny Depp back to the set as Captain Jack Sparrow without hesitation. He said this in a comment to the Daily Mail.
According to him, the actor’s accusations of violence against his ex-wife Amber Gerd and alcoholism are “not a problem” for the sequel – the problem is in finding the right script, leading actors and finances to revive the franchise.
“Johnny is beloved. I would not even doubt the choice of Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp is not a problem. The question is, is there a story worth it? Is the script good? Can it be directed? Can the financial issues be resolved? That is the question. The question has nothing to do with Johnny,” he assured.
Rossio added that Disney should not only bring Depp back, but also try to rebuild the main cast from the original debut pirate film Dead Man’s Chest.
Asked how far along Disney bosses were in their revival plans, Rossio admitted ignorance, saying: “Oh my God, I don’t have any inside information. Sorry, I can’t say.”
But then he noted that other factors tend to hold up reboots, and sometimes even the movies they want can take more than a decade to make.
Last year, fellow franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer talked about his hopes of bringing Depp back as Sparrow, but it was never confirmed that Disney would be involved in the project.
It was previously reported that actor Austin Butler may play the lead role in the sixth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean.
