Find out why the film ‘Ratatouille’, released in 2007, never got a sequel by Pixar
If you are a fan of ‘Ratatouille’, you have most likely already thought about ideas for a sequel to the film, after all, it is not difficult to imagine Remy perfecting his culinary talent in another country, or even challenging himself in an exquisite culinary competition. But with all these ideas, why has Pixar never released a sequel to the 2007 film?
The answer was given by the director of the plot, Brad Birdin an interview with io9 (via GIZMODO), where he revealed that, in his conception, the story of the little cook mouse is already closed, and that his desire as a filmmaker is to direct new stories on the big screen.
You know, I feel like this story has been told,” he explained. “They told me I need to do an Iron Giant 2 and I need to redo everything I did and apparently no one wants anything new anymore. I’m a little at odds with society on this. I would like to do some new things.”
He completed by venting about how he feels about being repeatedly asked about making ‘Ratatouille’ a franchise with more films.
It’s a cute thing, but also, from an artistic point of view, it’s a little frustrating. Like, what if I want to do a Western? Would there be any support for this idea? What if I wanted to do a musical? What about this? You know, it’s like there are other things to do,” he said.
How did ‘Ratatouille’ end?
It is worth remembering that ‘Ratatouille’ tells the story of Remy, a little gray mouse with a keen sense of taste who dreams of becoming a chef and sees the chance to make his wish come true when he enters Gusteau’s, a restaurant owned by renowned chef Auguste Gusteau, owner of motto that made Remy believe he would find his place in the world: “anyone can cook”.
Located in Paris, France, Gusteau’s ends up being found by Remy after a tragedy that leads him to distance himself from his family. There, he discovers that, after the death of Auguste Gusteau, the chef’s bastard son, Alfredo Linguini is working as a cleaner there — and it is with his help that Remy’s entire life will change.
This is because, after Remy secretly perfects a recipe that ends up being praised by critics and Linguini takes credit for the action, the restaurant’s Chef, Skinner, promotes the heir to the kitchen, leading the mouse and the human to devise a plan so that Remy continues cooking and Linguini doesn’t miss work, making the rodent hide under the young redhead’s hat every day and control his movements by gently pulling his hair.
As much as the partnership became a success, as in the midst of several misadventures Linguini becomes the new owner of Gusteau’s, fires Skinner and makes the restaurant one of the biggest in Paris, when the renowned critic Anton Ego visits Gusteau’s, chaos is established, as this is when Linguini reveals to his colleagues who the real cook was all along — Remy —, causing everyone to get upset and leave their posts in the kitchen.
So that the restaurant doesn’t close with a bad review after the employees suddenly leave, the rat calls his entire colony to prepare a dish called ratatouille and, even in the midst of a surprise visit from the health department that catches all the rats in the kitchen, He manages to finish the preparation, being widely praised by Ego, who in the end discovers that the food he liked so much was prepared by a mouse.
Even though Gusteau’s was eventually closed, Remy was recognized in Ego’s review (who also lost his job as a food critic) as a genius and the greatest chef in France, and, as a result, he became a real chef at La Ratatouille , restaurant opened by Ego and Linguini, fulfilling their old dream.
