David Beckham is closer to the British royal family. After being made an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, the former England footballer attended the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011 and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. Now he also has: close connection with King Charles III. The King’s Foundation, a charity created by the sovereign in 1990, announced on Saturday, June 1, that Victoria Beckham’s husband is now one of its ambassadors. The purpose of the King’s Foundation is to work “towards building a sustainable world”. For this, it targets young people in particular, offering them training in crafts, architecture and design, as well as science, engineering, horticulture, welfare and hospitality. “I am delighted to be working with The King’s Foundation and to have the opportunity to help raise awareness of the work of this charity,” David Beckham said in a statement published on the charity’s website. I have always been passionate about helping young people expand their horizons, and I am particularly keen to support the Foundation’s educational programs and its efforts to provide young people with better access to nature.”
Bee lovers
To celebrate this new partnership, the athlete and the British monarch met last weekend at Highgrove Gardens, part of the King’s private estate. This is where David Beckham was able to meet students taking carpentry courses at the Snowdon School of Furniture, as well as students from the Métiers d’art Embroidery Fellowship. “Having a love for the countryside, I have also made it my mission to learn more about the rural skills that underpin the foundation’s work,” he said on the occasion.
The new ambassador also revealed his common passion with the king: beekeeping. “During my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens, I found it inspiring to hear the King speak about the work of Her Majesty’s Foundation and compare his advice on beekeeping,” he said.
