Josh Musker, director of the animation ‘The Little Mermaid’, revealed that he didn’t like the live-action film starring Halle Bailey and directed by Rob Marshall
Through a recent interview with Variety, John Musker, director of the animation ‘The Little Mermaid’, openly criticized the live-action of the story. In his speech, he comments on the appeal that the film industry uses when reviving stories that, in theory, were only supposed to remain in animated format; he checks out:
Companies are always thinking ‘How can we reduce our risk?’ They like that, right? ‘Let’s remake this movie but in a different way’, or they think: ‘Well, we can do that, only better!’ (…) They didn’t do the father and daughter story right (in live-action), and that was the essence of the film, in a way. And the crab (Sebastião)… You can observe live animals in the zoo and they will have more expression, as in the case of ‘The Lion King’. And that’s one of the basic things about Disney, is their appeal. And that’s what animations do best.”
The live-action of The Little Mermaid, starring the actress and singer Halle Bailey and directed by Rob Marshall, grossed more than US$560 million at the box office around the world. However, public opinion remained divided between “liking or hating” the new version. Currently, the film is available on the Disney+ platform.
