On Instagram, the head of American psychiatry, Robert J. Waldinger shared a simple test to determine the impact of social media on our mental health.
Who hasn’t spent time on social media endlessly scrolling through different content? What if this activity could have a detrimental effect on our mental health? To find out, Robert J. Waldinger recommends conducting a simple test. In a video published on his Instagram account on May 11, the psychiatrist provides several slides to assess the impact of the smartphone on our mental balance.

To do this, you only need to spend ten minutes on our usual social networks. Then the psychiatrist recommends asking yourself a few questions. “Is my energy level higher or lower than what I had before I started this activity?” or “I feel more open to the world, or conversely, my view of myself, even or toward others, is has worsened.

Then, it is important to listen to their answers. “If you feel like you have more energy or are more open, this is an activity that works for you and makes you feel good,” says Robert J. Waldinger. Conversely, if you feel negative emotions, the specialist advises to “strictly limit” this practice and stay away from it as much as possible. In this sense, he takes as an example his personal influence on current events, which he voluntarily limits. “I want to know what’s going on in the world, but if I see too much, I get depressed, which doesn’t help anyone.”
