Celebrate Goku Day by learning the details behind the creation of the main character of the Dragon Ball franchise

This Thursday, the 9th, Goku Day is celebrated (Goku Day, in direct translation), where fans of the Dragon Ball franchise can pay homage to the protagonist created by Akira Toriyamawhich made its debut in Weekly Shounen Jump Magazine on December 3, 1984, but soon gained space in other media, as the story was turned into an anime two years later, in addition to being inspired by games and various collectible objects that gain space in shelves to this day.

The date that celebrates the existence of the boy with frizzy hair who has a monkey’s tail and whose objective is to find the seven dragon balls was made official in 2015 by the Japan Anniversary Association, having been chosen because, in Japanese, the numbers 5 and 9 are pronounced phonetically as “go” and “ku”, and as in the international calendar the month appears before the day, 5/9 becomes the perfect representation of the character’s name.

1. Goku’s story is inspired by a Chinese myth

“Journey to the West”, a mythological novel by the Chinese writer Wu Chengen, is one of the references used to create Son Goku. The similarity occurs, therefore, with the main character of the story, Monkey King, the figure created by Toriyama he also has transformation powers and cannot hide his tail.

2. Goku was voiced by a woman

The original dubbing of the anime features Goku voiced by the Japanese actress and voice actress Masako Nozawa. In Brazil, the character also gained a voice through a woman: Ursula Bezerrawho voiced the child version of the character.

In the grown-up version, Goku received the interpretation of Goku’s brother. Ursula,Wendel Luís Bezerrathe voice that popularized the phrase: “Hi, I’m Goku!”

3. Goku and Frieza’s fight was the longest in the anime

The battle between Goku and Frieza, in the third season of “Dragon Ball Z”, became the longest-running in the anime. This is because the fight starts in episode 87 and ends in 105, totaling 19 episodes and a total duration of 3h30min.

The Kamehameha is Goku’s signature move. Being an energy attack, to execute it, the character needs to concentrate a lot of energy, to finally launch it as an explosive beam from the palms of the hands.

Although very popular, Goku did not surpass the 100 Kamehamehas mark during the anime. In fact, the technique was used by him 97 times, as explained by the TecMundo portal.

5. At one event, Goku ate the equivalent of 50 people

It’s no secret that Goku is a foodie. Being a Saiyan, Goku has a very accelerated metabolism, so all the food he eats is metabolized quickly, which means he has no problem eating too much.

So much so, that after the 21st Martial Arts Tournament, the meal eaten by the character was equivalent to what 50 people could eat in a restaurant. As a result, the bill was high and Goku had to pay 470 thousand zeni, a debt paid off with a prize from Master Roshi, as recalled by the G1 portal.
