The cover of ‘The Little Mermaid’ that was banned from the market

Find out what the image on the VHS cover of ‘The Little Mermaid’ is and why it was removed from shelves when released

In 1989, Disney released its first film starring a princess without the presence of a princess. Walt Disney (1901 — 1966): ‘The Little Mermaid’, animated film based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name written by the author Hans Christian Andersen.

In the plot, the young princess Ariel faces difficulties in fitting into the reality at sea and dreams of living experiences on the surface. As much as it seemed like an impossible wish to fulfill, she ends up making a dangerous deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to live a romance on dry land, which ends up bringing frightening consequences.

The film was a great success and, in addition to being shown on the big screen, it also received a version to be played in the comfort of fans’ homes through the Video Home System, the VSH, which was nothing more than a tape, which was very popular in the 1980s and 1990s, where feature films and TV shows were recorded.

However, in addition to the adventure shown in the 1h23 duration of the plot, another detail ended up catching the attention of those who obtained the first VHS version of ‘The Little Mermaid’: the cover that was included for sale! This is because the illustration featured some figures that seemed suggestive.

In the image, the characters Ariel, Eric, Ursula and King Triton appear together in front of Triton’s castle, where the golden and shiny towers, which separate the plot’s couple from the other characters that appear on the poster, are the objects that drew the attention of some at the time, due to the double meaning format.

So much so that, according to the ScreenRant portal, it was confirmed that Disney took measures to ensure that the original art was no longer available, causing the VHS cover to be replaced by other art. Remember the image!

It is also worth mentioning that, even though the controversy surrounding the cover worried many parents at the time, the VHS of the film featuring King Triton’s youngest daughter was widely sold, even becoming the best-selling VHS of 1990.
