Why aren’t Elsa and Anna part of the Disney princess group?

Even though they are one of the biggest successes in animation, Elsa and Anna, from the ‘Frozen’ franchise, are not part of the select group. Find out why!

Frozen is considered one of the most successful franchises in the entire history of global animation. However, even with so much success, have you ever wondered why Elsa and Anna are not considered Disney princesses like the studio’s other classic characters?

There are two reasons for this issue, and the first of them is linked to some rules imposed by the studio so that a character can truly be considered a princess. It is worth remembering that, currently, the official lineup of Disney Princesses has twelve names: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Mérida and Moana.

To join this select group, the girl must be the daughter of kings, marry a member of royalty or commit a great act of heroism — which is the reason that explains Mulan’s presence, as she saved China. Furthermore, the character cannot have appeared in a sequel film, she must be the protagonist of her own film and must be at least half human.

Analyzing these rules, we can see that Elsa and Anna fit perfectly into them, except for one small detail: both were crowned queens in their history.

The eldest ends up receiving the title in the first film, after the death of her parents, while the youngest becomes sovereign after her sister decides that she will live as the fifth spirit in the Enchanted Forest in Frozen 2. This way, there is no way for the elect princesses, and literally both of them are already queens of Arendelle.

The second reason that prevents them from joining the group is precisely their success. The Frozen brand alone can raise good money for Disney through the sale of its numerous products, without the need to combine the main characters with the studio’s other classic princesses.
