In recent years, the legend of John’s widow, Alice Coltrane, has grown. In the 1990s and 2000s, he was rediscovered by a generation of musicians who saw great relevance in the trance of his music. In a constant search, her music reveals the genre that her husband best singled out, but adds outside influences, especially Indian music, which she quickly grew to love; he will also devote himself completely to it in the late 1970s, even opening an ashram in California. But in 1971, on the day of this legendary concert, in which she was accompanied by famous saxophonists, her husband’s traveling companions Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders, but also Indian musicians, her art was in transition; look to hypnosis and Indian and Eastern iterations. In the same year 1971, he spent several months in India… The strength of Alice Coltrane, an accomplished pianist, an accomplished harpist and, above all, an incomparable band leader, is that she maintains a balance between her various strengths and the music. the influences that populate what he uses sonically during this concert; he plays on the very fragility of the musical material. Above all, he manages to strike the right balance between John Coltrane’s gut-wrenching power and the unmitigated melancholy that seems to carry him at every turn; half of the concert is made up of pieces of the husband, like a memory. never ceases to return, under the sounds, in the heart of the music. On April 16, the Troyes Museum of Contemporary Art reopens its doors. After four years of work, it was renovated with new staging, new rooms and a new garden decorated with sculptures. Opened in 1982 by François Mitterrand and Jack Lange, the MAM, housed in a former bishop’s palace, was built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The collection museum houses the donation of more than two thousand works by the couple Pierre and Denise Levy to the state in 1976. “My simple ambition is for the visitor to understand that the collection is made with heart,” says Pierre Levy, who runs the industrial textile empire of which the Lacoste brand is a part, adding that “we don’t think; that making money is not fun. We have to look for something else.” It will be art, because the man who paints and caricatures himself is also drawing, and his wife, Denise, is taking lessons from the artist Maurice Marino. The new route begins with the realists (Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, Gustave Courbet, etc.). Following impressionism and post-impressionism, Paul Gauguin and the Nabis (Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Felix Vallotton…), Fauvere (Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, Raoul Dufy…), Cézanne’s class (“I’m with an apple: I want to surprise Paris”), Cubist the revolution (Juan Gris, Jean Metzinger, Julio Gonzalez…), the first school of Paris (Soutine, Modigliani), the second school of Paris… Added to that are such personalities as Bernard. Buffet or Balthus. The red wire? The issue of modernity in art. L.K.
