Around here, the series is so beloved that, even after 15 years since the release of the last episode, it is still common to see Brazilian fans commenting on the characters’ memorable lines in the cast’s publications. Tyler James WilliamsChris, for example, already commented that he was scared by the number of comments from Brazilian admirers on his posts.
On the other hand, Vincent MartellaGreg, has loved the Brazilian public on his networks, and will even visit the country in July for Imagineland 2024, in João Pessoa.
To celebrate the success of the production, check out 5 interesting facts about “Everybody Hates Chris” that you might not have known!
1. Difficult childhood
As presented in the series, Chris Rock lived a poor childhood, growing up in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Bed-Stuy (Bedford-Stuyvesant). At school, he also studied at a “white school”, where he was often physically and verbally attacked just for being black.
As reported by the TecMundo portal, his parents once had to change schools because the attacks were becoming so violent that they began to put his life at risk. Furthermore, interestingly, the series portrays the comedian’s adolescence in a different decade. This because Chris was a teenager between 1978 and 1984, and the series takes place from 1982 to 1987 following a request from the artist himself, as he believed that the cultural references of the 80s are stronger.
2. More brothers?
In “Everybody Hates Chris”, the protagonist has only two brothers: Drew (Tequan Richmond), the middle child, and Tônia (Imani Hakim), the youngest. In real life, Chris has seven more brothers: Brian, Charles, Kenny, Andrew (which would have inspired Drew), Jordan, Tony (inspiration for Tônia) and Andi Rock.
Another curious fact is that, in the series, Uncle Ryan, known for frequently borrowing money from Julius (Terry Crews), is played by Chris’s brother, Tony.
3. Film-inspired schools
Contrary to what many might imagine, “Corleone” and “Tattaglia” were not the schools where Chris Rock studied in real life. In the series, the institutions were named as a form of homage to the film “The Godfather”, as they are the surnames of two large mafia families featured in the film.
4. Real-life Greg
Yes, Greg existed in real life! The person responsible for inspiring Chris’s best friend, played by the actor Vincent Martellahe was David Moskowitz, the comedian’s best childhood friend. However, David revealed in an interview that he only discovered that Greg was inspired by him, and that the Chris who he met when he was little was the famous Chris Rock when the artist gave an interview on the Larry King Show and commented on the series.
According to David, this only happened because the two ended up losing contact after leaving school, and remained without hearing anything from each other for around 25 years. After that, the two finally had the chance to see each other again.
5. Death of Julius
O Julius really, father Chris, he also had two jobs, where he worked as a newspaper delivery boy and a truck driver. The patriarch, however, passed away prematurely in 1988 after ulcer surgery, when he was just 56 years old. According to the TecMundo portal, for this reason, the series ends in 1987, and does not portray the comedian achieving success and changing his family’s situation.
