Why aren’t Tinkerbell and Esmeralda Disney princesses?

Discover the reasons why Tink and Esmeralda no longer joined the franchise known as Disney Princess

Did you know that Tinker Bell, a character from ‘Peter Pan’ (1953), and Esmeralda, from ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ (1996) were once considered Disney princesses? The characters were already part of Disney Princess, a franchise created between the 1990s and 2000s, whose focus is to create collectibles, decorative items, clothing items, cosmetics and many other products aimed at children who are fans of the most popular female characters. important to the Walt Disney Company.

When created, the franchise had 10 characters in total, but over the years it went through reformulations, adding and removing members, and today it has 13 holders of the title of Disney royalty. They are: Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), Cinderella (Cinderella), Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Ariel (The Little Mermaid), Belle (Beauty and the Beast), Jasmine (Aladdin), Pocahontas (Pocahontas), Mulan (Mulan), Tiana (The Princess and the Frog), Rapunzel (Tangled), Merida (Brave), Moana (Moana) and Raya (Raya and the Last Dragon).

Why aren’t Tinker Bell and Esmeralda princesses anymore?

With the changes to the select group, Tinkerbell and Esmeralda ended up no longer being part of Disney Princess, as not only the formation changed, but also the requirements for a character to join the franchise, which currently has 5 rules:

  1. Being part of an animation;
  2. Being human or at least half human;
  3. Be the protagonist of the story;
  4. Being born a princess, marrying royalty or committing a heroic act;
  5. Bring a good financial return to the studios.

Thus, Esmeralda was removed because she was not marketable enough for the franchise’s standards, as sales of ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ products did not reach the target audience: children! This is because the plot addresses issues that relate much more to an adult audience.

In the case of Tinkerbell, even though the character did not fit into rules such as not being human or at least half human, after all, she is a fairy, the character left Disney Princess to star in another important studio franchise, the Disney Fairies.

As the protagonist of the franchise that aimed to reach an age group of children even younger than the princess fans, Tinkerbell, in addition to themed products, starred in six solo films: ‘Tinker Bell: An Adventure in Fairyland’ (2008); ‘Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure’ (2009); ‘Tinker Bell and the Fairy Rescue’ (2010); ‘Secrets of the Wings’ (2012); ‘Tinker Bell: Fairies and Pirates’ (2014); ‘Tinker Bell and the Never Monster’ (2015).
