Before Oppenheimer was released, there was debate about whether the film would even be released in Japan. This is causing controversy in the country regarding the subject of the film.

The film Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, was released in Japan. Variety reported it.

However, before the release of the film, there were speculations that the film would not actually be released in the country. It was controversial in Japan because of the film’s plot, which tells the story of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who led the development of atomic bombs. These weapons of mass destruction were detonated in 1945 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing hundreds of thousands of Japanese citizens.

Despite this, the Oscar-winning film was released, grossing $2.5 million from 343 theaters.

According to Universal Pictures, Oppenheimer earned the biggest opening weekend of 2024 for a Hollywood release in Japan, ahead of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ($1.6 million) and Dune: Part Two ($1.3 million).

It was previously reported that Christopher Nolan’s film starring Cillian Murphy as Robert Oppenheimer has become the second highest-grossing R-rated film.
