How to be correctly diagnosed with high intellectual potential?

ADVICE – In recent years, new requests for a diagnosis of HPI, or High Intellectual Potential, have invaded psychologists’ offices. But how to diagnose correctly? The answers of two experts.

In France, about 2.3% of the population is HPI or high intellectual potential. These personalities were once called gifted, then precocious. But what exactly does this mean? “We talk about an HPI person when his cognitive function is much higher than the norm, that is, a general intelligence quotient (IQ) greater than or equal to 130,” notes Elodie Parisato, a neuropsychologist. This score is obtained after conducting various random tests with a psychologist. “But to define an HPI person, we also need to confirm creativity and a special sensitivity,” adds Frédéric Bertin, a psychologist who specializes in HPI.

Be careful, being hypersensitive or creative does not necessarily mean being HPI. “Of the 20% of hypersensitive people in France, only 2% proved HPI,” recalls Frédéric Bertin.
