On Monday, March 18, the Arizona senator made a spirited plea to members of the establishment. While pregnant, she denounced her state’s restrictions on abortion rights.

“A few weeks ago I found out that, against all odds, I am pregnant,” she began. Senator Eva Burch, a Democrat from Arizona, delivered a 10-minute speech in the US Senate on Monday, March 18. A petition in which she talked about her desire to have an abortion despite the restrictive measures in place in her state. “Many of you know I’ve had a rough road with fertility,” she continued, with several of her colleagues standing behind her in support. I had my first miscarriage over thirteen years ago and have been pregnant several times since then.’

The senator, however, announced that both of her pregnancies have ended and that she is the mother of “two beautiful, healthy little boys.” The politician then said that two years ago he already experienced an “unstable pregnancy”, which allegedly “broke his heart”. A situation in which he found himself again. “I want to tell you the opposite today, but after multiple ultrasounds and blood tests, it became clear that my pregnancy was not progressing and that it was once again non-viable,” she explained. Before adding, “I have made another appointment to have an abortion.”

“I choose abortion”

Eva Burch argued that people should not have to justify themselves when choosing to have an abortion. “I decided to talk about this because I want us to be able to have meaningful conversations about how the work we do here affects others,” he said. The senator claimed that she had worked as a nurse for the previous twelve years. “Pregnancy increases the risk of health problems that anyone can have,” he stressed. Before proceeding. “It carries more risks than abortion, which is a very low-risk procedure (…).”

Eva Burch confided that if she continues the pregnancy, she will definitely have a miscarriage. “I’m not interested in going through all of this unnecessarily,” he said. The safest and most appropriate treatment for me and my choice is abortion.” The senator, however, laments that his state’s laws on the subject interfere with his ability to obtain an abortion. “First, I was asked to do an ultrasound in another clinic, as any patient in this type of institution is asked (…), he explained. I didn’t do it because my doctor told me to do it, but because the laws of my state forced me to do it.” And Eva Burch added: “It was an intrusive ultrasound that I didn’t want or need, done by someone who didn’t have to.”

“Cruel experience”.

The senator said he “can’t imagine” how “inappropriate” it would be for a victim of sexual or domestic violence to endure the same thing. He also claimed that he was subjected to “misinformation” during his hospital stay. She would be offered two alternatives to this abortion: mother or adopt the child. “As if having a healthy baby was an option for me,” she lamented. It’s not.”

Before adding. “I had to sit and listen to this cruel attempt to spread false information by outside forces to embarrass me, to coerce and intimidate me. But also encouraging me to make a decision that I knew was bad for me.” Eva Burch also told about the time when the hospital refused to give her an abortion because she was “not in a serious enough condition”.

“I was given medication to make me bleed more and I was told I could have a miscarriage when I bleed enough,” she said, highlighting the dangers of such an intervention. The next day, Eva Burch had an abortion in another clinic. The senator said Arizonans deserve “the freedom to make these kinds of decisions” and that laws on abortion rights need to change. Twelve US states are currently hoping to vote on the issue in November. Roe v. Wade, the American decision that protected women’s abortion rights, was overturned in June 2022.
