Household products. these 2 rules to follow to limit our exposure to chemicals

Certain precautions should be taken to limit our exposure to chemical cleaning products. Dr. Jimmy Mohamed and hygienist and microbiologist Christophe Mercier present them in an Instagram video.

It’s (finally) time for spring cleaning. But before you start sorting and cleaning every room in the house, there are a few precautions you should take when choosing cleaning products. “Be careful, don’t buy anything that can make you sick,” recalled general practitioner Jimmy Mohamed in a March 18 video posted on his Instagram page. The doctor, accompanied by hygienist and microbiologist Christophe Mercier, gives two rules to follow when buying cleaning products to protect your health from certain chemicals.

Say goodbye to spray bottles!

“We avoid the sprayer in all cases,” Christophe Mercier immediately points out. Reason ? Spraying the product “smudges beyond the treated surface,” he warns. This is bad for our health because we will “breathe it in and get it on our skin”.

Avoid scented products

Citrus, floral or menthol freshness… The choice of scents is large. Only you should choose a cleaning agent without it, experts emphasize. “These are perfumes that will remain in the atmosphere that you will breathe,” warns the hygienist. According to the latter, there is a risk of “respiratory allergy”.

Use 4 main products

“You don’t need to buy 10 billion household products,” quips Jimmy Mohamed, before introducing what he thinks are four key products. The first, white vinegar, for its degreasing and exfoliating powers. But if the strong smell of this disinfectant bothers us, biologist Christophe Mercier presents an alternative: citric acid. “Three tablespoons in half a liter of water” has the same merits as vinegar, “without the unpleasant smell,” he assures. Perfect for “all scale removal at home”.

The third main product. Baking soda “to scrub everything, to whiten all your surfaces, to remove caked-on grime…” advises the hygienist. So, one tablespoon in a little water will do wonders. Finally, a cap of ecological black soap in four liters of water will allow us to “clean the gas stove, but also the roof,” he says. Not forgetting to finish rinsing.
