On the occasion of International Women’s Day, feminist associations and unions encourage women to stop working and do housework.

The slogan is clear: we are all on strike. On its Instagram, the “Dare to Feminism” association is preparing to take to the streets on March 8 and calls on women to do the same. But the call for a strike on this International Women’s Rights Day is not just about work stoppages. “We stop all activities in our workplaces, places of consumption, in our homes,” the association says. For what ? “If we stop, everything stops,” the publication explains. If we stop, we stop this system that exploits women in the workplace and in society as a whole.” And the association is also encouraging people to join demonstrations across France to “defend the rights of all women”.

Persistent wage disparities

Dare Feminism is not the only association calling for women to strike at work and at home. This year, around fifty feminist organizations jointly initiated this call. During their press conference on March 1, CGT’s Miriam Lebkiry reminded that there are wage inequalities “in all companies and in all administrations”. Information confirmed by the INSEE study published on Tuesday March 5, which shows that female workers will earn on average 23.5% less than men in the private sector in 2022.

Unequal distribution of household work

Soad Baba Aïssa, an activist with the association Femmes Solidaires, explained that “not doing housework also allows us to show how important everything we do is”, reminding that “even if the situation evolves, the division of housework remains is highly unequal, including when both spouses work.

On March 8, a number of events are organized throughout France. In Paris, it should take place on the Place de la République.
