Charles III’s wife will succeed him in an event that has been ensured for centuries by British sovereigns themselves, not husbands.
In the absence of the king, he is in charge, and this time it is historic. Charles III continues his royal duties despite undergoing treatment for cancer, which he has been undergoing since February. But we know in advance that the sovereign will not be able to fulfill certain obligations. So it is for the Royal Service on Maundy Thursday, which will take place on March 28 at Worcester Cathedral. Therefore, it is his wife, Camila, who will replace him. If this is not the first time that the Queen has hosted an event instead of her husband, then this replacement is more special than the others.
A centuries-old tradition
Every year on Maundy Thursday before Holy Easter, a royal liturgy takes place. Since 1213, it has been the tradition of the British monarch to distribute coins to the present population, often to local pensioners. A way to imitate the belief that Jesus washed the apostles’ feet before the Last Supper. For centuries, this tradition has been ensured by the monarch himself. But with Charles III’s planned absence and Queen Camilla replacing him, for the first time in history, it will therefore be a husband who will rule. Because even if the term “consort” has been dropped from Queen Camilla’s royal title, she remains so through her marriage to the sovereign.

On Thursday 28 March at Worcester Cathedral, Camilla will be handing out 75 pieces to Britons who will be attending. Tradition dictates that the number of coins distributed corresponds to the age of the monarch, i.e. Charles III’s 75 years. Worcester Cathedral also welcomed the visit of the British Queen, confirming the event on its social networks.
The announcement of this event comes shortly after the tabloid Sun revealed that Camilla was “exhausted” from her recent official visits. The Queen would therefore decide to give herself a few days of “sunny, overseas” leave after securing 13 royal engagements following her husband’s cancer announcement.
