The Japanese brand teamed up with American label Airei to create an original concept pair. To wear it, you have to burn the top layer first.
Get out the lighters, matches and burners. Designed in collaboration with Airei, the avant-garde label of American designer Drew Curry, Asics’ new sneakers call for playing with fire. When shopping, the Gel-Quantum Kinetic pair presents itself in an almost classic way. It is black, and the soles are shiny, aggressive. A veil of fabric surrounds it, and it is this first layer of black fabric that must be burned. Once the fire is extinguished, the Asics logo appears and the pair takes on a unique, unique look.
On Instagram, Airey explains: “This is a song of the indomitable spirit that resides in all of us. (…) Fire symbolizes immersion in a noble cause, and open shoe fabrics bear the scars of challenges overcome.” The pair actually have some veil remnants on them, as if they’ve been through the challenges before they even get dressed.
Great success!
The concept, if dubious (as it still means intentionally “damaging” a new thing), has nevertheless caught fire (if we dare). Sold for $265 (or currently €244) in one sale at Dover Street Market in Los Angeles, there are only thirty signed and numbered pairs. All were sold in a short time.
