Several individuals signed a text asking senators to vote in favor of including the right to abortion in the Constitution. The latter should essentially decide on the topic this Wednesday, February 28.
“There is no threat of abortion in our country (…), Senate President Gérard Larchet announced to Franceinfo at the end of January. I think that the Constitution is not a catalog of social and public rights.” Since then, some personalities, such as Sophie Marceau, have been outraged against this speech. “Of course there is a threat of abortion!!! (…), he replied on Instagram. You are a shame to our French society. As long as there are men like you, we will all be in danger.” Since then, a petition addressed to the Senate president, along with eight other caucus chairs and the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, appeared on Change.org on Wednesday, February 7.

“History Follows You”
“This appeals to the President of the Senate. vote for abortion in the Constitution,” we can read in this petition initiated by the Women’s Fund. This is a call to all senators, listen to the women. This is a call to the Senate. history follows you.” Before proceeding. “Because if the Senate does not vote on the proposed text on February 28, as threatened by Gérard Larchet, the constitutionalization could be buried.” A possibility that “annoys” the signatories. “We are women,” they write. We had an abortion. Or we didn’t have an abortion, but we want to choose to be a mother or not.”
The authors of the text reminded that their elders “struggled for the freedom to manage their bodies to be irrevocably recognized”. “It should become a fundamental right recognized as such by our supreme text,” they added. And the signatories emphasize that “nothing is ever considered optional for women”. Remembering that in the United States “two months after the Supreme Court’s decision, 13 states canceled the right to abortion.” Other countries have also implemented anti-abortion policies, they add.
“A fight at every moment”
“French exceptionalism is a constant struggle,” the authors of the text claim. Before adding: “She is a beacon for many women around the world who are fighting for freedom. All over the world, women are forced to give birth to children born of rape. All over the world, women die from illegal abortions or are thrown into prison. And the signatories emphasize: “From the right, from the left, men or women, with pride, 86% of us want abortion in the Constitution.” They concluded the text with a clear message to the senators. “It doesn’t cost you anything. It changes everything for us. Do not deprive us of this security. Mr. Gérard Larchet, we ask you to vote in favor of abortion under the Constitution.” The verdict is this Wednesday, February 28.
