It is possible to watch the X-Men films both in chronological order and in order of release in theaters; find out which one is best for you!
X-Men fans received news: the animated series “X-Men 97” will be available on Disney+ on March 20 this year. Watch the trailer!
After the announcement, many people wanted to marathon all the films in the X-Men franchise on streaming. However, there are several productions, some newer than others, but with stories that take place before. And all of this leads to the question: what is the best sequence to watch the X-Men films? Following release order or chronological order? Because of this, Recreio brought both orders.
Release order
The release order of the films is very simple and straightforward. If we follow the premiere dates we have:
X-Men: The Movie (2000)
X-Men 2 (2003)
X-Men 3: The Last Stand (2006)
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
X-Men: First Class (2011)
Immortal Wolverine (2013)
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
Logan (2017)
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Chronological order
The chronological order tends to follow a timeline of events. However, it is important to highlight that there are some controversies and contradictions in the films. It’s important to keep this in mind when marathoning productions, but it won’t ruin your experience either! The list looks like this:
X-Men: First Class
The film is responsible for showing the origins of mutants. The plot begins in 1944, in a concentration camp. Soon after, the year 1962 is skipped, where the whole story unfolds.
X-Men: Days of Future Past
This is a film that will appear twice, according to chronological order. This is because the story takes place in two timelines: in the year 1973 and in 2023. This way, following the order, we would only have one of the timelines here.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The film’s story begins at the end of the 19th century. However, as the main story takes place in 1979, and shows how Wolverine gained his adamantium claws, he is in this position.
X-Men: Apocalypse
Despite being a film released in 2016, its story takes place in 1983.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
The film’s main plot takes place in 1992, which puts it higher on the list, even though it begins in 1975.
X-Men: The Movie

The first film in the X-Men franchise was not only released in 2000, but is also set during that period.
X-Men 2:
Just like the first film in the original X-Men trilogy, this film takes place in the same year it was released, which in this case is 2003.
X-Men 3: The Last Stand
The story of the last film in the franchise’s original trilogy takes place in 2006.
Wolverine immortal
In this film, we see Logan trying to deal with the loss of Jean. The story takes place in 2013, so it ends up working both as a sequel to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and to “X-Men 3”
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Here comes the timeline that takes place in 2023.
Logan
The film takes place in 2029 and portrays how tragic the future of Wolverine and the mutants is.
[Alerta Spoiler]
After confirmation that Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman will be in “Deadpool 3”, many fans wondered how this would be possible, since the mutant dies at the end of “Logan”. And what explained this collaboration between the characters is that the Wolverine film takes place in 2029, while the third Deadpool feature, played by Ryan Reynoldswill take place before, according to rumors.
The stars made a video to explain this dynamic, but ended up “trolling” their fans; check it out!
