With the countdown to the premiere almost over, “Madame Teia” hits theaters next Thursday, the 15th, presenting the origin story of Cassandra Webb, the character who gives life to the heroine that gives the film its title.
Who is Cassandra Webb?
In the film, Cassandra Webb is played by Dakota Johnson. In the previews released, she is presented as a paramedic living in Manhattan, who gains a new purpose when she discovers that she has the ability to clairvoyance, that is, she can predict the future.
Thus, one of her visions leads her to three young people: Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabella Merced) and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor). With the quartet formed, they will discover a powerful future together. Remember the trailer!
In Marvel Comics, Cassandra Webb’s origin is very different. The character, created by Denny O’Neil It is John Romita Jr. in 1980, she has been blind since birth and has an autoimmune neurological disease called myasthenia gravis, in which antibodies destroy communication between nerves and muscles, resulting in weakness of skeletal muscles, mainly affecting the eyes, face and swallowing.
But, even though the condition left her physically disabled, as she lived attached to life support equipment made up of a set of tubes that had a shape similar to a spider’s web, the same disease gave her psychic powers and of clairvoyance, transforming her not only into a powerful medium, as she used her abilities to guide other people, but into a mutant.
The character’s abilities include:
- Telepathy: reading minds;
- Astral Projection: detach consciousness from the body and travel anywhere; Clairvoyance: obtaining knowledge without using the five senses (touch, vision, smell, hearing and taste);
- Precognition: predicting future events.
First apparition
Madame Teia appeared in Spider-Man stories and in her first appearance, she was presented as a trickster through the eyes of Teioso.
Still, the view of her changed when Cassandra Webb used her skills to help the hero save an employee of the Daily Globe newspaper, which was a rival to the Daily Bugle. More than that, her reputation became even more credible after she revealed that she knew Peter Parker’s real identity, without him ever commenting on it.
The character died after having her story crossed with Kraven the Hunter’s family, having her life taken by Sasha Kravinoff through a cut in the neck. Before passing away, Cassandra “transferred” her powers to Julia Carpenter.
