INTERVIEW – In his book The art of discharge daily violenceCanadian social worker Isabelle Côté invites us to understand the mechanisms of violence and to know ourselves better in order to resist verbal or physical attacks.
“Why didn’t I say that?” “I shouldn’t have phrased it that way”… You’ve probably already pondered and replayed in your head the scene of a verbal assault you’ve experienced, either as a victim or a witness. Violence is so surprising and destabilizing that we rarely respond as we would like. It is in this sense that Isabelle Côté wants to help. A social worker in Canada for 35 years, she received death threats about twenty years ago, which affected her physically and psychologically until she was on sick leave for a year. In order to understand and treat the mechanisms of violence, Isabelle Côté conducts research by meeting prison abusers as well as prosecutors. After creating a work for social professionals, he published The art of easing everyday violence (1), to inform the general public and help in the fight against everyday violence. An interview
