Jacquemus Sculptor Bourgeois Women Parade in Saint-Paul-de-Vence

At the Maeght Foundation, in this south where he is so connected, designer Simon Porte Jacquemus presented a spring-summer 2024 collection that revels in sensuality and a more mature femininity.

The cocktail is magical. Blue skies, canopy pines and artwork as far as the eye can see. The Maeght Foundation near Saint-Paul-de-Vence concentrates the spirit of the ultimate art of life, entirely dedicated to beauty. It is in this legendary place, where the works of the most important artists of the 20th century (Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Georges Braque…) are stored, that Simon Porte Jacquemus wanted to present his “Sculptures” collection, immediately available in c. shop “I am obsessed with design,” emphasizes the designer born in the south of France. I wanted to show a collection that tells about who I am today, what I love, what I’m passionate about,” explains the designer.

Humor and sophistication

The starting point for this Sculpture Collection. Works by artist Alberto Giacometti, known for his bronzes of slender men and women who seem to be spinning in space. Jacquemus’ silhouettes have the same tapered, narrow, slender profile, dressed in long black dresses that follow their forms like a pencil line drawn between the ground and the sky. But there is nothing fragile or unreal in them. “When I started working on this collection, I had two opposing ideas in mind: Giacometti’s sculptures… and bourgeois clichés. I wanted to bring these two worlds together.” Humorously, Simon Porte-Jacquemus transforms these “sculptural silhouettes” into high-class women walking forward with sweater-like tops tied around their shoulders, a quintessential bourgeois cliché.

They wear tight suits, interrupted by two-tone shoes or double shoes for a surreal touch. They wear cream coats with rounded sleeves and XXL collars, like Gigi Hadid at the opening of the show. They parade in evening gowns embroidered with highly couture swirling silk threads called “ponytails.” “I imagined a woman who goes horseback riding, so she wears leggings, high boots and carries a bag like a riding bomb,” continues the designer. “There’s apparently something quite cool about this look with this closed shirt collar, but very quickly things become sunnier, more sensual, more ‘Jacquemus.’ The bride perfectly encapsulates this marriage of opposites, sculpting in this custom-made bust with a plunging antique and traditional veil.

Arguably one of the designer’s most successful and established collections, this precise, very precise collection is aimed more at the established woman than the young woman in the making. “It’s true, it’s not the silhouette of a young girl like I’ve been able to offer in my other collections,” she confirms. I wanted to offer a new sensuality, a more mature woman who would have grown up with me. I’ve been doing this job for fifteen years now, and it’s time to think about the brand in the long term, to talk to both our young customers and those who have grown with us.” This intention was also reflected in the choice of guests, as alongside Gen Z star Kylie Jenner, who came with her 5-year-old daughter Stormi (but also her 399 million Instagram followers), Jacquemus invited “another generation » representatives, Christine Davis (Charlotte York Sex and the city) and the extremely rare Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts.
