Following his surprise abdication, announced on Sunday 31 December, the Danish monarch may be taking more time off to head to his much-loved wine estate near Cahors.
She was spotted walking the aisles of Cahors Market in mid-August. There is nothing surprising when we know that every summer Queen Margret II goes to her French property, Château de Cayx, located in the town of Luzech in Lot. An area where the Danish sovereign could remain more regular. The latter actually announced his abdication on Sunday, December 31.
A prestigious wine estate

The residence was acquired in 1974 by Margrethe II and her late husband, Prince Henrik of Denmark. The family of the latter, of French nationality, had actually settled in Albas, near Kayaks, for several decades. Together, Margret II and Prince Henrik renovated this 24-hectare estate into a prestigious wine estate.

Caix, a huge free-standing stone castle built on a cliff on the hillside, has a winery, several hectares of vineyards, but also a museum containing several thousand works of art. Despite the death in 2018 of her husband, with whom she once organized summer concerts at the property, Margret II continued to visit this place close to her heart.
“I am particularly happy to be at Keix, my husband’s property, which we acquired after our marriage,” she confided after Prince Henrik’s disappearance. We spent wonderful weeks there. I want to come back every summer to reconnect with home, the region and my husband’s extended family.” Those interested will be able to take part in guided tours of the property every summer.
