Why are the new Oompa-Loompas so different? Director reveals

‘Wonka’, a new film inspired by the classic ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, opens in theaters this Thursday, 7

This Thursday, the 7th, the film “Wonka”, starring Timothée Chalametand which adapts the classic children’s work “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, by the British writer Roald Dahl, released in 1964. The new version promises to delve deeper into the story of Willy Wonka before creating his famous chocolate factory. Check out the trailer!

It is worth remembering that this is not the first time that the story of Dahl is adapted for film. The famous book has been on the big screen twice, the first in 1971, starring Gene Wilderand the most recent in 2005, starring the actor Johnny Depp.

Despite both being extremely famous, the film starring Depp ends up being better known among the public for being the “newest”, especially among younger fans and, for this reason, some comparisons have emerged since the release of the “Wonka” trailer — such as the look of the Oompa-Loompas.

If we are to compare, the appearance of the classic characters in the new film are completely different from those presented in the 2005 version, however, they are extremely similar to those from 1971. But why does this happen?

In an interview with Empire, Paul Kingdirector of the film, revealed that he decided to adopt a look similar to the 1971 Oompa-Loompas, as he is passionate about the first version of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

“That seemed like what an Oompa Loompa was, in my head. I suppose because the ’71 film is so dear to me, as well as other people, I didn’t really want to reinvent the wheel on that.”

Furthermore, King He also completed his speech by stating that he “couldn’t do what Tim Burton [o diretor do filme de 2005] does”, believing that the director is a “genius” at what he does.
