See what happened to District 13

Discover the history of District 13, the place in Panem that is introduced to the public in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1”

In the first two films of the franchise “Hunger Games” in theaters, the entire narrative is set in the events involving the Capital and the 12 districts of Panem, a country governed by the tyrannical President Snow. Therefore, one of the big surprises of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” was discovering that District 13 still existed.

THE HISTORY OF DISTRICT 13

Whether for fishing, energy or timber production, each district of Panem is responsible for the development of a specific area of the country’s economy and development. In this way, District 13 was responsible for carrying out graphite mining, as well as the development of nuclear science and technology, which were used to produce weapons, vehicles and technologically advanced equipment, which served to maintain the power of Capital.

Still, when the first rebellion broke out, District 13 stopped supplying military equipment to the Capital. With this, as the portal Screenrant states, concern arose among members of the Capital about losing the war, since District 13 had concentrated great power in nuclear weapons which, if used against them, could easily defeat them.

As a measure, the Capital signed a peace treaty with District 13. The agreement stated that District 13 would no longer support the rebellion and in exchange, they could be considered an independent state — and it was like that for more than 70 years!

To keep the agreement secret, the citizens of District 13 began to live in underground bunkers and the Capital spread throughout Panem that District 13 had been destroyed during the conflict. Without the support of District 13, the other districts began to weaken, resulting in the Capital’s victory.

After winning, the Capital implemented the Hunger Games, where an annual draw was made for a boy and girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the 12 districts, who would be prepared and sent to a controlled arena to fight each other to the death. , leaving only one survivor. District 13 did not participate in any edition of the competition.

Even so, after the third edition of the Quartenary Massacre (a special edition of the Hunger Games held every 25 years), it was revealed that District 13 had not disappeared, much less had left behind the conflict that had been going on for so many years, as they They had been preparing for years to take power from the Capital.

This is because, led by President Coin, they improved their military power during the years they lived underground, in addition to preparing themselves physically and mentally for the rebellion, as they acted like a true battle squad, with training, regulated schedules and use of uniforms.

With this, they became a fundamental part of the end of the Hunger Games, as they supported the second revolution by rescuing Katniss Everdeen from the 75th Hunger Games, in addition to having rescued members of District 12 who survived the fatal attack on the Capital, since under the President Snow’s orders, the place was left in rubble.

Although at first District 13’s actions seemed to redeem its inaction towards the Capital’s violence against the twelve districts over the last 75 years, when the Capital is defeated, President Coin’s real intention in supporting the revolution is revealed, as she proposes that another edition of the Hunger Games is held, leaving Katniss with no choice but to take the last blow of the revolt and kill her.
