After all, what was the end of Lucy Gray?

Discover the answer to one of the most frequently asked questions about Lucy Gray, character from “The Hunger Games – A Song of Birds and Snakes”

With the release of “The Hunger Games – A Song of Birds and Snakes”, fans of the franchise that adapts the books of Suzanne Collins for the big screen they were able to discover more about the past of President Coryolanos Snow, as the plot is set 64 years before the events experienced by Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), shows him as a young man, played by Tom Blythwhile monitoring his performance after being called up as a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games where he guided the District 12 tribute: Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler).

In the film, as the mentoring evolves, Snow’s relationship with Lucy Gray goes beyond the limit of pupil and master, as the two begin to experience an unlikely romance. So much so, that after the tenth edition of the competition, the organizers discover that Coryolanos cheated so that Baird could live, and as punishment, they remove him from the Capital and give him the role of peacemaker.

But that didn’t make him give up on Lucy Gray, as he managed to send her to District 12, where he was able to meet his loved one again. Amidst several confusions, Lucy and Snow decided to run away together to the forest, but the blossoming passion ended up taking a different direction. This is because Baird discovered all the murders committed by Snow, deciding to flee when he realized that Snow’s thirst for blood and power would not cease.

However, while escaping, Coryolanos chased the girl and shot her, ending the couple’s story. The event, as mentioned by the producer Nina Jacobsonin an interview with People (via Screenrant), was also responsible for sealing Snow’s fate.

There are two surviving characters, and she feels that their survival still requires a moral code. He feels that survival at any cost is ultimately justified. When he suddenly realizes that she sees him differently, that is the final ingredient to this transformation.

Still, the harrowing sequence does not show Baird’s body, but even with his death unconfirmed, his name seems to have been forgotten in the future. Thinking about this, the question arises: what really happened to Baird?

After all, what was the ending of Lucy Gray?

The question does not have an answer. This is because, in both the books and the films, the character’s whereabouts are not revealed, which allows readers and viewers to design an ending for Lucy Gray according to their own interpretations.

The only certainty is that Lucy Gray’s name is not mentioned in the next games, as the history of the 10th edition was deleted, as revealed by Dr. Volumnia Gaul and Coryo in the book (via IGN). In fact, in the first Hunger Games book, Katniss states that two people from District 12 won the competition, one of them being Haymitch Abernathy, while the other was not named.

However, the ambiguous ending caused fans to create theories about what happened to Lucy Gray, as there are those who believe that she actually passed away, which would justify not having any more records of the character, as Snow could have disappeared with the body.

Despite this, others have more hopeful views, as is the case of Rachel Zeglerthe character’s portrayer in the movies, who prefers to believe that Baird lived up to his trajectory as a survivor and managed to be free.

Lucy Gray’s main goal throughout the film is survival. She’s outliving her fellow tributes, outliving Snow, and outliving herself. There comes a moment when I think she realizes she’s taken the wrong path, and we see her wince a little when Coriolanus touches her chin… those are the sobering moments. These are the moments when she wakes up from her own performance and realizes it’s do or die. I always think about what happens to my characters as the credits roll to the audience. When it comes to Lucy Gray, I like to think she’s free. I hope one day I can hear that from Suzanne”, revealed the actress in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar (via Screenrant).
