Director Catherine Hardwicke reveals she had to convince producers to cast Pattinson in ‘Twilight’
WithRobert Pattinsonin the role of vampire Edward Cullen, the saga “Twilight” celebrates this Tuesday, 21, 15 years since it was adapted for cinema. However, what some may not imagine is that Pattinson he was almost left out of the saga because he wasn’t pretty enough for Summit Entertainment, as revealed by the director Catherine Hardwicke in an interview with the Watchables podcast [via Variety e Omelete].
When he came to my house for the first auditions, he had black bangs and was a little out of shape because he was going to the pub every night,” Hardwicke recalled. “But when we filmed the scenes with Kristen [Stewart] and I watched the material the next day, I realized that not only did he work well as Edward in person, but he also worked on camera.”
The biggest problem arose when Pattinson met with Summit executives who asked the director whether the actor’s appearance was good enough to play the vampire who appeared in the author’s books Stephenie Meyermaking her have to convince them that he was the perfect actor for the role:
They called me right after and said, ‘Do you think you can make this guy look good?’ And I said, ‘Yes. Look at his face! Let’s change his hair, and he’ll start going to the gym, he’ll look like a real hunk’. They believed me, but they didn’t want Robert initially. Maybe he went to the meeting with a stained t-shirt”, joked Hardwicke.
Published between 2005 and 2008, the Twilight books were adapted for the big screen in 2008, when the first title was released to present the unlikely romance of the human Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).
The franchise came to an end in 2012 with the release of the fifth feature film “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2”, which was directed by Bill Condon.
