8 scenes from Disney and Pixar animations that were changed in other countries

In some animations, small details ended up being changed by the production to fit in with local culture. Find it out!

Animations are usually successful in all four corners of the world. But for this to happen, some details need to change depending on where the film is shown. It’s just that what works with the American public doesn’t always go well with the Chinese or Brazilians. The culture of each country greatly influences the reception of films!

1. Which do you prefer?

In Inside Out, there is a scene where Riley refuses to eat broccoli. But the producers realized that, in Japan, the joke wouldn’t make the same sense — the country’s children love to eat broccoli! So, in the Japanese version of the animation, the vegetable was replaced by green pepper.

2. Favorite sport

Another change in Inside Out happened in the dinner scene, which shows the thoughts of Riley’s parents. The version for most countries shows Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger watching a football match, the most popular sport in most of the world. But, in the version for the United States and Canada, the emotions are watching hockey, a favorite sport among the North American population.

3. Fun solution

In Monsters University, Randall prepares cupcakes and decorates them with letters that form the phrase “Be my pal”. As the game only makes sense in countries that speak English, in most of the world the letters on the cupcakes were replaced by happy faces. So everyone understands!

4. Different phrases

In Monsters, Inc., the monster factory’s slogan, which appears on the company’s facade, is different in each language. In English, the phrase became “We scare because we care” (“We scare because we care”), while in Spanish it changed to “Sustos que dan gusto” (“Scares that give pleasure”). In the Brazilian version, the phrase appears as “In the scare and in the scream, we make it beautiful”.

5. Where is the flag?

Anyone who has watched Toy Story 2 knows that, in the film, there is a scene in which Buzz Lightyear gives a speech to motivate the toys to look for Woody. In the original version, behind the character, we can see the United States flag. In the version distributed to other countries, Buzz speaks in front of a globe.

6. Many animals

In Zootopia, each country got a version of the local newspaper anchor, with animals typical of each region. In the United States, Canadian and French versions, the anchor is a moose; in Japan, it is a raccoon dog; in Australia and New Zealand, a koala; and, in China, a panda. In Brazil, the anchor is a jaguar called Boi-Chá, voiced by the journalist Ricardo Boechat – a really fun pun!

7. Multiple versions

Original heroine of the animation Aviões, Rochelle has 11 different versions, depending on the country. In Brazil, she is Carolina. In Russia, Tânia and, in Germany, Heidi. Furthermore, each of them bears the colors of the national flag.

8. Universal image

In the North American version of Up — Altas Aventuras, a glass jar is shown with a paper written “Paradise Falls”. In the version for international audiences, the paper features a photo of the location.
