Review seven surprising foods that can cause bloating with a nutritionist.
We know that white bread, raw vegetables, or coffee in large quantities can make the stomach bloated, but there are other foods that we don’t think about that are just as bloated. Here are seven, deciphered by dietitian nutritionist Alexandra Rethion.
Sweets without sugar
We know that chewing gum can cause bloating due to air entering the stomach. Broccoli
Rich in vitamins and many nutritional benefits, broccoli remains a cruciferous vegetable. Therefore, it does not avoid the same consequence as cabbage. “It will ferment in the intestines and cause gas,” explains Alexandra Rethion.

“If you have a sensitive gut, almost all fruits will bloat your stomach because they are rich in fiber,” says the dietitian nutritionist. Eating a fruit like a banana before exercise doesn’t necessarily have the same effect, but if you finish a full meal of protein, starch, and vegetables, the banana may stay on your stomach.
Shea seeds
Although they’re great for filling and rich in omega-3s and minerals, Alexandra Rethio tells her patients that they can cause stomach upset when consumed in large quantities. “They are very rich in fiber, and when mixed with water in the body, they become viscous and ferment, which can lead to swelling of the stomach,” explains the specialist.
Certain dairy products
People have trouble digesting the lactose found in yogurts or even milk. “Most of the time, when we have a bloated stomach, it is due to the fact that our body does not have enough lactase enzymes to digest lactose,” explains the dietitian nutritionist. This cannot be said for cheese, which contains a very small amount of this enzyme.

“Anything that inflates can cause bloat,” informs Alexandra Rethion. When you eat a certain amount of bloated foods, such as popcorn or rice cakes, the air in the food causes abdominal swelling.
