Cate Blanchett speaks at the European Parliament on November 9, 2023. AFP:
This Thursday, November 9, Cate Blanchett addressed the European Parliament to raise awareness of the plight of the millions of refugees displaced by conflict and to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Pacifist speech. Cate Blanchett used the podium of the European Parliament in Brussels to spread a message of peace and unity on the brink of multiple wars hitting Europe and the Middle East. With a clear presentation, he, who is also the ambassador of the UN Refugee Agency, wanted to remember the fate of tens of millions of displaced people, the victims of those conflicts.
An actress who takes her role to heart
“I’m not Syrian, I’m not Ukrainian, I’m not Yemeni or Afghani. I don’t come from South Sudan, I don’t come from Israel or Palestine,” he says, recalling the conflicts that remain in these countries. “I witnessed the human cost of war, violence and persecution when I met refugees from all over the world,” continues the UN ambassador, who has visited different areas and was able to understand the trials of the civilian population. The Australian actress explains that “forced displacement globally has crossed the fatal threshold of 114 million people”, before adding that “many of them have been rejected, rejected and scorned or even scapegoated”.

After recalling these facts, the 54-year-old actress wanted to take a position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Like the UN, it still believes in diplomacy and advocates “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the immediate release of all civilians held hostage”.
