Rafa Brites celebrates women’s power ahead of Barbie’s first videocast in Brazil

Responsible for leading the first Videocast of the most famous doll in the world, Rafa Brites remembers his childhood and reveals which is his favorite Barbie

In her commitment to encouraging the unlimited potential of girls, Barbie presents her first Videocast to Brazil. Televised by SBT, every Saturday, after “Bake Off Brasil”, until the end of the month, it will be the day of “Barbie: You Can Be Everything You Want to Be”, with a presentation by Rafa Brites and special guests. After the videocast airs on open TV, the complete program will be on SBT’s official YouTube and Facebook channels.

To celebrate this moment, the Barbie brand invited the presenter Rafa Brites to share your experience facing the challenge of the doll’s first videocast. Let’s go?

– How is your relationship with Barbie? Did you play with her as a child?

Rafa Brites: “I always loved Barbie, I had many dolls. Ken… I only had one. But Barbie, I always had several and they were always my friends. Now, as an adult, seeing this brand’s movement towards female empowerment, gender equality and Because of the diversity, I started to like it even more.

I find her the biggest inspiration, precisely because she is a leader. You can always be whatever you want and whatever your imagination allows. We are always very oppressed, right? But with the arrival of Barbie, things changed and she has a plane, a house, a pet shop. It’s crazy! And she inspires girls to aspire to that.”

The arrival of the Videocast is also in time to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Barbie Brecha do Sonho Project (Dream Gap in English). Launched in 2018, the proposal arose from research carried out by the brand in partnership with New York University, which discovered that, from the age of five, many girls begin to develop self-limiting beliefs and think that they are not as intelligent and capable as they are. boys, generating initiatives to close the girls’ dream gap, making it clear that the challenges do not lie with girls who lack self-confidence or motivation – gaps often occur in the world around them.

Reinforcing this launch and, aiming to help more girls around the world, the brand launched a global auction as the only opportunity for fans around the world to take home a replica of Barbie dolls made in the likeness of five most relevant role models, among which stands out Katya Echazarreta – Electronics engineer, first Mexican woman to travel to space and president of the Katya Echazarreta AC Space Foundation

Each of the women honored this year was presented with a doll made in their likeness to celebrate advances in their industries to improve opportunities for girls.

Although progress has been made towards gender equality, there are still stereotypes and social issues that can affect a girl’s future path and choices. This project is a mission dedicated to closing this gap, challenging these stereotypes and helping to undo prejudices that prevent them from reaching their full potential.

– And which was your favorite?

Rafa Brites: “My favorite is Barbie who flies (then Fairy Barbie, now Dreamtopia Barbie). It’s no longer enough to be able to do and have everything, but she’s also a fairy and was able to fly. I thought it was great!”

– You are the mother of two boys, but you are also an aunt, a sister… How is the relationship with the doll you surround yourself with?

Rafa Brites: “My boys, since they started talking I’ve tried to teach them to respect women. They really like watching documentaries about the Animal Kingdom, so I always try to reinforce positive messages about females. Lionesses, elephants, they are powerful. Women are powerful and I want to introduce them to all of them: white, black, indigenous, PCD… these women here fight for a cause and it’s the same thing with Barbie.”

– This is the year of Barbie, first the first live-action of the most famous doll in the world and, now, the first Videocast in Brazil. How is the challenge going?

“I was very proud! There are countless Barbies, they are all women and they can be whatever they want. I believe that the film helped change perception and with the videocast even more so. We will talk about important issues with incredible guests.”

In Barbie Videocast ‘You Can Be Anything You Want’, each episode will bring an important topic to Barbie that will be debated with a super team of experts and women in prominent positions to discuss gender equity, inclusion and diversity. The guests and role models are: Nathalia Arcuri, finance specialist and founder of Me Poupe!, whose YouTube channel is the largest in the personal finance segment in the world; Lais Souza, former athlete and speaker on the inclusion of PWD people; Maira Gomez, a young Brazilian indigenous influencer who reports on the culture and traditions of her people and her family’s routine, accumulating more than 6.5 million followers on her social networks; and Roberta Freitas, beauty communicator and influencer known for promoting body positive messages on her social networks.

The chats also include the presence of NGOs that make these themes become a reality for thousands of girls across the country and making this chat even more enriching, namely: NGO Inspiring Girls (Barbie’s long-time partner) , NGO Meninas em Campo, and League of Women for the Oceans.
